Home Medical Equipment: The Essentials for Monitoring Your Health
Partager
Having the right medical equipment at home allows you to monitor your health daily, quickly detect anomalies, and communicate better with your doctor. Here are the essentials to have at home.
1. The Blood Pressure Monitor: Priority No. 1
High blood pressure affects 1 in 3 Europeans and is often asymptomatic. A home blood pressure monitor allows for regular monitoring.
How to use it correctly:
- Measure at rest, sitting, after 5 minutes of calm
- Always on the same arm (preferably the left)
- Take 2-3 consecutive measurements and average them
- Normal values: below 130/80 mmHg
⚠️ If your values regularly exceed 140/90, consult your doctor.
2. The Pulse Oximeter: Essential Post-COVID
The oximeter measures blood oxygen levels (SpO2) and heart rate. It has become indispensable since the pandemic.
- Normal SpO2: 95-100%
- Below 92%: consult a doctor urgently
- Ideal for asthmatic, cardiac, or elderly individuals
3. The Thermometer: The Must-Have
Indispensable in any family medicine cabinet. Choose a CE-certified electronic thermometer for accurate measurement.
- Fever: temperature above 38°C
- High fever: above 39°C
- Emergency: above 40°C or fever in an infant
4. The First Aid Kit
A well-equipped kit should contain:
- Bandages of different sizes
- Sterile compresses
- Disinfectant (chlorhexidine or betadine)
- Elastic bandage
- Splinter tweezers
- Thermometer
- Disposable gloves
5. The Glucometer (For Diabetics)
Essential for diabetics, the glucometer allows for home blood glucose monitoring and adjusting treatment in agreement with the doctor.
